Animating female characters is 'really, really difficult,' says Disney.

Animating female characters is “really, really difficult” because you have to “keep them pretty” while they go through “a range of emotions”?

Oh, come on.

Bu that’s what the head of animation for Disney’s Frozen said in an interview this week. Not great PR, particularly since Frozen features two female lead characters who bear a suspicious resemblance to one of Disney’s other recent princess characters, Rapunzel.The similar appearance of Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa only highlights the lack of racial diversity in Disney animation. Is it authentic for Western European fairytales to focus entirely on white characters? And if so, does historical authenticity even matter when you’re marketing the movie to a diverse, 21st-century audience of kids who live in a multiracial environment? #1DDAY: One Direction will do whatever fans want, live, for 7 hours this November.

Have you ever wanted to just sit down and watch seven straight hours of One Direction hanging out together and catering to your every whim?

Well, maybe not your every whim, but this is more or less what 1D Day is all about. Announced in a YouTube video today, One Direction have decided to do a seven-hour livestream this November, just hanging out online with you and several million of your best friends.

There’s a deceptively still body of water in Tanzania with a deadly secret—it turns any animal it touches to stone. The rare phenomenon is caused by the chemical makeup of the lake, but the petrified creatures it leaves behind are straight out of a horror film.

Photographed by Nick Brandt in his new book, Across the Ravaged Land, petrified creatures pepper the area around the lake due to its constant pH of 9 to 10.5—an extremely basic alkalinity that preserves these creatures for eternity.
